South Street Seaport

The South Street Seaport in New York is a place of great cultural significance. It is located in the suburb of Manhattan in New York City, and the neighbors of the popular financial district. The South Street Seaport is home to some of the oldest architecture in the city, and is also home to some of the oldest buildings in town.

Many of the buildings have been restored, but were originally built in the early 19th century and are still in use to this day. The location is known for its excellent tourist attractions and a particularly good view of the Brooklyn Bridge.

The South Street Seaport Museum got its start in 1967. The original creators of the museum were Peter and Norma Stanford. Their original plan was to create the museum as a historical site that the working conditions of the early years of New York City celebrates the seaport, mainly 1820-1860. In 1998, Congress ruled the South Street Seaport Museum is one of a number of different museums, which together are "America's National Maritime Museum." Many of the pieces from the museum were actually used during the heyday of the South Street Seaport, and restored. It is home to more than 30,000 square feet of space used for exhibitions and educational conferences. It is also home to the world's largest privately owned collection of historic ships.

Some of the more popular are the oldest vessels in their possession, the Pioneer, a schooner from 1885 and Ambrose, which was a 1908 lightship. The latest ship, that their collection is the Marion M, who used it in 1932 as a water sports shop lighter.

Because the vessels are restored, under optimal weather conditions, they are used for the public to participate in the water, and a feeling for how the boat handled when they were used to get, and exactly how they operate.

While the South Street Seaport never a major role in the economy of New York is always one of the most popular locations for tourists and visitors. There is so much history and so much information in the museum. They were able to put together a huge collection of historic ships, documents and tools that were used to help to bring items into the port in the 19th century. The museum was not taken seriously as a tourist attraction until 1982, when renovation and redevelopment began on the site. During the redevelopment, they added a number of modern shopping and nightlife attractions for tourists to convince them to come down to the location and what it had to offer to see. The location is accessible from a number of New York City bus lines, and can also be reached by water taxi.

The South Street Seaport may not have played all the major a role in the development of the city, but it has become an iconic location for historical information and preservation.

Today, the building is best known for serving as the headquarters of the National Broadcasting Company television network. The building is a total of 850 meters long, and was designed by the famous Art Deco architect Raymond Hood.

The building was previously named to the Radio Corporation of America, which was a subsidiary of General Electric. The building served as the offices of the Rockefeller family, and housed some of the most important business negotiations in American history.

In 1985 the building was finally granted landmark status. At that time, was one of the most famous skyscrapers in the United States, thanks to its unique design. The building has been given several nicknames throughout its history including "The Slab" and "30 Rock", which was the inspiration behind the title of today's situational comedy NBC's "30 Rock".

One of the most famous works in American history, the photograph "Lunch Atop a Skyscraper," was taken from the top of the building when it was under construction in the 1930s. Today it is one of the most recognizable images in the world.

Just below the observation deck on the top floor restaurant is the famous "Rainbow Room." Although the restaurant recently changed ownership and underwent several renovations and changes, has reopened to the public.

Some of the most popular television shows have aired on America's GE Building. Today, The Today Show "is still broadcast from the ground floor of the building, attracting many visitors to the exterior of the building. The show is famous for allowing visitors to peer through their glass windows, while live broadcasts. "The Tonight Show" was filmed in the GE Building during the first year, and their space is now occupied by "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon."

The view from the "Top of the Rock" is great, and gives tourists a magnificent view of New York City. Because on top of one of the largest skyscrapers in Manhattan, shows visitors all the attractions of a top-down view. There's really nothing like it anywhere else in New York.

The cultural significance of the GE Building and views from the observation deck are well documented. New York Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York City. It was first built in 1883, making it almost the oldest suspension bridge in the U.S.. Commuters to leave the Brooklyn Bridge over the East River, and is over 1500 meters long. For over twenty years was the longest suspension bridge ever built for the title was eclipsed in 1903.

Originally, the iconic monument was designed by a German immigrant named John Roebling August. He had spent his life designing suspension bridges, but at that time had never designed anything as big or important as the Brooklyn Bridge. Although his original design was used as the basis for the project, while conducting studies for the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, had his foot crushed between a ferry and a pylon. He was forced to his toes amputated and eventually developed tetanus, which eventually led to his death. In the wake of his death, his son, Washington Roebling placed in charge of the project.

Unfortunately for Washington, during construction he too would experience complications after developing decompression sickness. The condition left him unable to on-site, and all instructions must be delivered to the managers on site by his wife.

The construction of the bridge was not finished until May 24, 1883. Thousands of New Yorkers attended the opening ceremony, and the East Bay was filled with boats. The chairman at that time, Chester A. Arthur attended the opening ceremony and over the bridge next to the mayor of New York, Franklin Edson middle cannons for the celebration.

Today, the Brooklyn Bridge is a very popular tourist attraction and is an integral part of transportation in the city. Even today it still stands as the most effective way to travel from Manhattan to Brooklyn.

After the events of September 11, the bridge was used as a way to the city after the subway system was shut down for fear of more attacks to leave. The huge number of people crossing the bridge was something the original designer never anticipated, but luckily Washington Roebling was redesigned aspects of the bridge, adding a number of support systems for just one event.

The cultural significance of the Brooklyn Bridge is difficult to measure. Although the bridge appears to be commonplace in the minds of most Americans today, at one time the bridge was considered one of the greatest successes in American culture. The building had many years, and the designers faced many unexpected problems during the construction process. Even today the bridge is the most underrated tourist attraction in New York City, and is an integral part of daily life for many people who live there. After the celebration of 125th anniversary of the bridge for a period of five days in 2008, it is clear that the Brooklyn Bridge is still well alive in the hearts and minds of Americans across the nation.
