Can I live in Brooklyn for $2000 a month?

Q:
If I make $2000 a month can I afford to live in Brooklyn?

I keep seeing people say you can barely survive in new york on a 45,000 salary, seriously? I guess you can't survive on this salary if you are very high maintenance.

I've seen apartments that can cost as low as $1,100 (with utilities included) which is very affordable for someone pulling in near $2000 a month. I spend about $160 a month on grocery, $60 on lights, $40 on food, $20-$40 on transportation and $40 a month on my phone bill and the rest I just throw into savings.

I don't drink, smoke, party, go out to eat or go out much at all and when and if I do go out it would cheap deals like on discount days at the museum. So I don't have to worry about money consuming vices. I also don't eat much and I don't eat any meat or dairy so food shopping is very easy for me. I am a frugal person with a good handle on money so it would not be hard to manage,.

So why does everyone say you have to make $80,000 plus just to live in NYC?

I am moving to Brooklyn regardless. I can't see how I can't make it on $2000 a month, am I missing something?

A:
You can definitely live on $2000 a month in Brooklyn, especially if you live with roommates and share expenses. But I agree with the other answerers - it will be tight. Your transportation costs, bills and food will be much higher than you are predicting.

I live in Greenwood Heights, Brooklyn. Studio apartments in my neighborhood start at around $1150, and I'm sharing a two-bedroom place for $725 a person. It's is not too far from a vegetarian-friendly grocery store and the express train to Manhattan, so it's a good place for me to live, but it's not what most people would consider a "desirable location." Apartments get a lot more expensive as you get closer to Manhattan, so while $1450 gets us a modest-sized two-bedroom apartment in Greenwood Heights, it might only get you a small studio in Williamsburg or Park Slope.

My monthly costs are quite a bit higher than you predict for yourself, and I think we live similar lifestyles after you factor out my love for the drink. We keep things to a minimum at our place (no cable) and still pay between $50 and $60 a month each in bills. You'll pay twice that if you live alone. Transportation costs will be *much* higher than you're predicting, and I highly recommend getting a monthly Metrocard ($104) and sticking to the public transit, since owning a car can become too much.

In terms of food, I almost believe you when you say you only spend $40 a week in food, but I can't imagine it will last. Once you're in the stream of New York City life, you'll find less and less time to cook, and once you've broken the take-out seal, it's going to be hard to go back to cooking every night. You should prepare to spend at least $100 a week in food, on lean week, even if you're cooking most of your meals.

All of those basic expenses come to about $1400 a month with a roommate, and would be closer to $1800 if you live alone. I'm believing you when you say you don't go out and don't drink, but if you do, you're looking at at least $200 a month on top of that. So you'll be fine, but it will be tight, and probably won't work if you don't find a roommate. Subletting a room while you get your feet on the ground might be the best way to start.

Side note: Be careful during your apartment search; $1100 apartments are not unheard of, but they're rare. There are a lot of shady cats working as real estate brokers in New York City, and those less-expensive apartment listings are frequently the bait in a bait-and-switch scenario. They'll get you to meet them and once you're on their turf they'll tell you they "just rented" the apartment they listed. They'll ask you if you want to see other apartments, but those will not be as nice as the picture in the ad, or will be more expensive. If you want to avoid that headache, your best bet is finding someone who is happy with their apartment and asking them how they got it, or paying for an honest broker (yes they exist.)

New Years Eve in New York for college aged group of girls?

We're a group of 3 college-aged girls from Australia and are looking to go out for a fun night in Manhattan for New Years Eve. We don't want to brave the crowds and go to Times Square for the ball drop but are looking for a bar with a relaxed attitude where we can dance to good music (R&B, Top 40, Hip Hop, etc) and also be able to hear each other talk and meet other people around our age. Preferably $100 or less for entry and open bar. Hope we're not being too demanding haha!

A:
Are you all over 21? If so, you can find something along the lines of what you're looking for, minus the open bar. Bars and clubs are open to make money, and liquor makes them money. You can either have music, or hear each other talk, not both.
If you're under 21, you'll have to find a non-alcoholic option.

What hotels are good to stay at in New York City, New York?

Myself and two friends are going to be visiting New York in September for like four days, and we were wondering what are good hotels to stay at in New York City. A-1:

It might be a good idea to stay in a hotel in Brooklyn like the Park House Hotel. Where are the MOST common places to see celebrities in New York?

Q: My mom and i are taking a trip to new york soon and we want to go to a place where we can see celebs just for fun (were not going to bother anyone) but im very intirested in the movie bussiness and it would be cool to see some actors ot actresses. we heard of the Soho house would we see them there? WHERE? also do celebs walk around New York? where? i heard Emma Stone lives there and she walks all the time i would die if i saw her!

A-1: That place with all the celebrities.
Its New York anyone is everywhere, you just need to get lucky.

A-2: Soho house is members only. Stay in a fancy hotel and maybe you'll be lucky. I stayed at the Soho Grand and it was full of them. I also saw Gwyneth Paltrow and SJP. Separate occassions in Greenwich Village. I can't say it changed my life in any way. New York city is amazing. Celebrities are not special.

A-3: I live in new York and love it!! I live in Brooklyn and very rarely see celebrities. Also, don't believe all the hub. Yeah you may see a celebrity in soho but it is actually really rare and most likely they will ignore you ( happened to me ). So I hope you enjoy your time but don't get your hopes to hi because you most likely will be very disappointed. But Soho and Brooklyn are your best bets!
Hope you have a good trip!

A-4: Hang aroung studios that do talk shows.
Below are some examples to check out.
* The Late Show with David Letterman
* Saturday Night Live

A-5: The Real Housewives of New York

A-6: Believe it or not, many celebrities bank in the areas right above 42nd St. (Times Square). Stay away from the tourist areas, but go to neighborhoods that are still popular and you may get lucky. Spike Lee is ALWAYS in SoHo.

What is the most famous thing in New York City?

Aside from the obvious there are several new great things to see in NYC. Such as the ground zero sight where 9/11 happened, the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building. The Today Show in Rockefeller Center where you can wave to the national news cameras in the mornings on weekdays from 7-9am. And a new really cool thing to do in NYC is the 'sex and the city' if you are into the former show.

How much would a month long trip to NYC cost?

Q: So me and one of my best friends have always wanted to go to New York City and just experience the city. My friend is strongly considering moving there, and I have been thinking about it. We want to go for about a month, but we know it's very expensive. We are thinking about shortening the trip because of the cost. We are definitely driving and we live in south Texas. How much would a hotel, traveling, spending money, and eating out cost? Thanks!

A-1: I took a school trip to ny and dc and I had to pay almost 2000$(which counts as plane ticket from california, food, tour guides, tickets to places ect) to go for 5 days. But we got really nice hotels and food at fancy restraunts. And it also payed for a Broadway show and other places we went to. I had the time of my life! But it really depends on what you plan on spending your money on and where your going to stay. So your going to need a lot less depending on what you plan on spending it on. But I hope you do go New York its an amazing place!

Hotels Near Broadway in NYC?

Q: Me and a friend are planning our New Year's/Christmas trip to NYC this year and wanted to start checking out hotels and prices now to get ahead of things. I'm taking her to a musical on Broadway and then are going to Times Square to watch the ball drop. I've been searching, but I can't find any hotels around that area that have gotten high or even decent reviews on the sites, though I'll admit I'm terrible at using the booking sites. I'm just looking for something nice, a little fancy maybe, between 270 and 400 a night and is near or close to the Broadway area. Anybody have any suggestions?

A-1: You will NOT find a hotel on,near, or close to broadway during the winter holiday season for under $400. That is like saying Lamar Odom is better than Michael Jordan. It won't happen, so I advise you to stay somewhere in Jersey, Brooklyn, or Queens, and just commute into the city by train. It will be your best option because you will save money, and the hassle of all the traffic that will be on and near Broadway during the holiday season. A commute from Brooklyn into the city on the train will be 30 minutes at the MOST. It would just be better to stay there or somewhere far from Broadway and commute. NYC has some of the best and most transportation methods you could ever think of. My word of advice would be to use them. Saves money and headaches.

A-2: As you are planning to visit NY around Christmas, my advice is to use one of the websites that offer hotel accommodation because of the price you will get. Personally I usually use one of them that is a book now and pay on arrival system. I prefer to use it because I just have to make the booking in advance so that I can secure the room and pay for it as soon as I arrive in the hotel! This is quite convenient as for me because meanwhile I can make any changes in the booking!
So I am going to give you the link with hotels in NY so that you can check and make your decision! I am pretty sure that here you will find what you are looking for and what's more the prices will meet your budget!

South Street Seaport

The South Street Seaport in New York is a place of great cultural significance. It is located in the suburb of Manhattan in New York City, and the neighbors of the popular financial district. The South Street Seaport is home to some of the oldest architecture in the city, and is also home to some of the oldest buildings in town.

Many of the buildings have been restored, but were originally built in the early 19th century and are still in use to this day. The location is known for its excellent tourist attractions and a particularly good view of the Brooklyn Bridge.

The South Street Seaport Museum got its start in 1967. The original creators of the museum were Peter and Norma Stanford. Their original plan was to create the museum as a historical site that the working conditions of the early years of New York City celebrates the seaport, mainly 1820-1860. In 1998, Congress ruled the South Street Seaport Museum is one of a number of different museums, which together are "America's National Maritime Museum." Many of the pieces from the museum were actually used during the heyday of the South Street Seaport, and restored. It is home to more than 30,000 square feet of space used for exhibitions and educational conferences. It is also home to the world's largest privately owned collection of historic ships.

Some of the more popular are the oldest vessels in their possession, the Pioneer, a schooner from 1885 and Ambrose, which was a 1908 lightship. The latest ship, that their collection is the Marion M, who used it in 1932 as a water sports shop lighter.

Because the vessels are restored, under optimal weather conditions, they are used for the public to participate in the water, and a feeling for how the boat handled when they were used to get, and exactly how they operate.

While the South Street Seaport never a major role in the economy of New York is always one of the most popular locations for tourists and visitors. There is so much history and so much information in the museum. They were able to put together a huge collection of historic ships, documents and tools that were used to help to bring items into the port in the 19th century. The museum was not taken seriously as a tourist attraction until 1982, when renovation and redevelopment began on the site. During the redevelopment, they added a number of modern shopping and nightlife attractions for tourists to convince them to come down to the location and what it had to offer to see. The location is accessible from a number of New York City bus lines, and can also be reached by water taxi.

The South Street Seaport may not have played all the major a role in the development of the city, but it has become an iconic location for historical information and preservation.

Top of the Rock

The "Top of the Rock" refers to the observation deck that sits on top of the GE Building, located at Rockefeller Center. Located in the heart of midtown Manhattan, the location is one of the most popular tourist locations in New York City.

The building was previously known as the RCA building until 1998, when the name was changed. Today, the building is best known for serving as the headquarters of the National Broadcasting Company television network. The building is a total of 850 meters long, and was designed by the famous Art Deco architect Raymond Hood.

The building was previously named to the Radio Corporation of America, which was a subsidiary of General Electric. The building served as the offices of the Rockefeller family, and housed some of the most important business negotiations in American history.

In 1985 the building was finally granted landmark status. At that time, was one of the most famous skyscrapers in the United States, thanks to its unique design. The building has been given several nicknames throughout its history including "The Slab" and "30 Rock", which was the inspiration behind the title of today's situational comedy NBC's "30 Rock".

One of the most famous works in American history, the photograph "Lunch Atop a Skyscraper," was taken from the top of the building when it was under construction in the 1930s. Today it is one of the most recognizable images in the world.

Just below the observation deck on the top floor restaurant is the famous "Rainbow Room." Although the restaurant recently changed ownership and underwent several renovations and changes, has reopened to the public.

Some of the most popular television shows have aired on America's GE Building. Today, The Today Show "is still broadcast from the ground floor of the building, attracting many visitors to the exterior of the building. The show is famous for allowing visitors to peer through their glass windows, while live broadcasts. "The Tonight Show" was filmed in the GE Building during the first year, and their space is now occupied by "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon."

The view from the "Top of the Rock" is great, and gives tourists a magnificent view of New York City. Because on top of one of the largest skyscrapers in Manhattan, shows visitors all the attractions of a top-down view. There's really nothing like it anywhere else in New York.

The cultural significance of the GE Building and views from the observation deck are well documented. Some of the most prestigious in the world of pop culture icons were filmed inside the building, and even today some of the most popular shows of the nation's live broadcast or film inside the GE Building. As long as NBC used the building as their headquarters, the GE building remains a relevant piece of pop culture in America. Its cultural significance, along with his infamous Art Deco design have made it a must-stop location for many tourists travel to New York.

New York Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York City. It was first built in 1883, making it almost the oldest suspension bridge in the U.S.. Commuters to leave the Brooklyn Bridge over the East River, and is over 1500 meters long. For over twenty years was the longest suspension bridge ever built for the title was eclipsed in 1903.

Originally, the iconic monument was designed by a German immigrant named John Roebling August. He had spent his life designing suspension bridges, but at that time had never designed anything as big or important as the Brooklyn Bridge. Although his original design was used as the basis for the project, while conducting studies for the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, had his foot crushed between a ferry and a pylon. He was forced to his toes amputated and eventually developed tetanus, which eventually led to his death. In the wake of his death, his son, Washington Roebling placed in charge of the project.

Unfortunately for Washington, during construction he too would experience complications after developing decompression sickness. The condition left him unable to on-site, and all instructions must be delivered to the managers on site by his wife.

The construction of the bridge was not finished until May 24, 1883. Thousands of New Yorkers attended the opening ceremony, and the East Bay was filled with boats. The chairman at that time, Chester A. Arthur attended the opening ceremony and over the bridge next to the mayor of New York, Franklin Edson middle cannons for the celebration.

Today, the Brooklyn Bridge is a very popular tourist attraction and is an integral part of transportation in the city. Even today it still stands as the most effective way to travel from Manhattan to Brooklyn.

After the events of September 11, the bridge was used as a way to the city after the subway system was shut down for fear of more attacks to leave. The huge number of people crossing the bridge was something the original designer never anticipated, but luckily Washington Roebling was redesigned aspects of the bridge, adding a number of support systems for just one event.

The cultural significance of the Brooklyn Bridge is difficult to measure. Although the bridge appears to be commonplace in the minds of most Americans today, at one time the bridge was considered one of the greatest successes in American culture. The building had many years, and the designers faced many unexpected problems during the construction process. Even today the bridge is the most underrated tourist attraction in New York City, and is an integral part of daily life for many people who live there. After the celebration of 125th anniversary of the bridge for a period of five days in 2008, it is clear that the Brooklyn Bridge is still well alive in the hearts and minds of Americans across the nation.

The space is built over more than 770 acres of land owned by the city at the moment. Shortly after the park first opened, it was a plan to renovate the park and made the park was officially completed in 1873.
The location is a designated National Historic Landmark, as of 1963. The park stretches from 59th Street and 110th Street, and is about a half mile wide by. Central Park is a must-see tourist attraction for most individuals who visit New York. One of the most popular attractions within the park boundaries, the "Angel of the Waters', a fountain was erected in the park in 1873.

Beginning in the 1960s, the park has played host to a number of famous events. The Public Theatre organizes an annual "Shakespeare in the Park" festival, where a number of different theatrical groups to perform plays written by Shakespeare in front of crowds at the Delacorte Theater, which was built in 1961.
During the 1970s, amid political turmoil in the United States, the park became a venue for major events that the protests, political gatherings and huge concerts included. During that period of time, crime in New York City was high and many of the inhabitants of the city were sent to the suburbs. Central Park reigned as a meeting place for people of all faiths, and helped the low morale of New York residents to breathe. These events also helped to fund the Parks Department to create. During the year 1970 the Parks Department experienced severe budget cuts, and were looking for ways to get someone in the park for additional income that would allow them to take good care of Central Park to create.

The number of people in the park caused a great deal of decay, and poor management contributed to the situation. In the early 1980s, efforts were begun to restore the park. This includes numerous species of plants, trees, and the promise to citizens that the graffiti does not last more than 24 hours on every wall in the park. This policy has been accepted and today, even though graffiti is not the problem it once was in the park. Together with the renovation came a restructuring of the park management to ensure that the problems of the past remain.

Central Park is the best known and most visited park in the United States. It is home to many different activities including bird watching, boating, and various sporting events. Central Park is embedded in the fabric of New York City, and has become a relevant part of American culture since it was first built and opened in 1857.

Empire State Building

For many, the Empire State Building is one of the most famous tourist attractions in New York City, and is high on the list of many New York visitors. In previous decades, the skyscrapers relevance in pop culture was sky high, as it was incorporated into many different pieces of literature and movies.

Standing at 102 stories high, is located where the Empire State Building 5th Avenue and West 34th Street crash. The name of the building is derived from the nickname for New York, also known as The Empire State.

After erection, the building was the tallest building in the world for more than four decades. The construction of the Empire State Building, finished in 1931, and the building remained the world's tallest building until several other buildings were built in the city, including the WTC North Tower, which eclipsed his mark when it was completed in 1972. After the events of September 11, 2001, when the north tower collapsed after a jet plane flew into the Empire State Building is again the tallest skyscraper in the city high above the rest.

The huge building has received numerous awards for outstanding architecture. In fact, even in 2007, more than 70 years after the construction of the tower was completed, it was still number one on the list of America's Favorite Architecture, which is an award that is given by the American Institute of Architects. One section shows how popular the skyscraper in American culture, even now.

Starting today, the Empire State Building recognized as the third tallest skyscraper in America (surpassed only by the Willis Tower and the Trump International Hotel & Tower), and is also recognized as the 15th tallest building in the world. The building is in the process of undergoing some serious renovation to ensure that the building is ready for the future. During the renovation, they will ensure that the building's energy efficiency and environmentally safe.

The building was designed by William F. Lamb, whose company produced the blueprints for the building in less than 14 days, using a plethora of previous designs. The work officially began on the Empire State Building on March 17, 1930. At that time in New York after the title of having the world's tallest building, and the Empire State Building would be a solution to that problem.

When the tower was on May 1, 1931, it immediately became one of the biggest attractions of New York, attracting a sightseeing of New York. Even today, the Empire State Building is the centerpiece of many pictures of New York. The building lights up the night sky, with its famous floodlights pointed at the top of the building.

Today, nearly 70 years after the skyscraper was built, it stands for freedom and grandeur of the United States. Although it is no longer the tallest building in the world, their relevance in pop culture is still evident by the photos of the New York City, as it is above all the buildings surrounding it. The Empire State Building is an iconic American site.

Going to New York City!

New York is the largest city in the United States and is also one of the most populous cities in the world. It is not, as many believe, the capital of the United States - and not the state that bears his name. But it is undoubtedly the country of culture, communication, business, finance, occupying a leading position in the fields of politics, education, industry, commerce and transport .The international stature of the Big Apple was recognized after World War II, when she was chosen to host the headquarters of United Nations headquarters.
The metropolitan New York is comprised of five boroughs: Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens an Staten Island for a total of approximately 800 square kilometers.

The Bronx is the northernmost neighborhood and only found on land, has 1.4 million inhabitants and has a reputation for violence in its most south. Founded by a Danish immigrant, Johannes Bronck, the Bronx has a rich Italian heritage, magnificent botanical gardens, homes of writers Edgar Allan Poe and Mark Twain, and for baseball fans, leYankee Stadium.

Brooklyn, on the western tip of Long Island, became the first suburb of New York when it was annexed to the city in 1898.
